چکیده

Iron is an essential nutrient that functions as a cofactor for cellular enzymatic redox reactions. Hosts and pathogens compete over iron survival. Previous studies have implicated the skin unique site homeostasis major contributing source to excretion from body: Primary human keratinocytes store ferritin function of exogenous addition, with modulation their differentiation. Wildtype mice subjected systemic bolus or chelation demonstrate changes in total epidermal elemental content. We hypothesized stores influence both levels could affect cutaneous pathogen To test this, C57Bl6J were treated one-time (1mg/kg intraperitoneal) chelator desferrioxamine (300 mg/kg then epidermis microbial survival on was evaluated. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) performed dispase-split mouse identified significant content by these interventions (p < 0.0001). After topical challenge C.albicans, animals overload had decreased C. albicans CFUs = 0.0014) consistent clinical observation C.albicans-associated angular cheilitis patients deficiency. However, no difference observed S. aureus after manipulation. These findings suggest turnover may be regulated mechanism matches behavior levels, physiologic implications some infections.

Interleukin 17-Mediated Host Defense against Candida albicans

Candida albicans is part of the normal microbiota in most healthy individuals. However, it can cause opportunistic infections if host defenses are breached, with symptoms ranging from superficial lesions to severe systemic disease. The study of rare congenital defects in patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis led to the identification of interleukin-17 (IL-17) as a key factor in host d...

Candida albicans iron acquisition within the host.

As a commensal and opportunistic pathogen, Candida albicans possesses a range of determinants that contribute to survival, persistence and virulence. Among this repertoire of fitness and virulence attributes are iron acquisition factors and pathways, which allow fungal cells to gain this essential mineral in the iron-poor environment of the host. The aim of this review is to present the strateg...

Interplay between Candida albicans and the mammalian innate host defense.

Candida albicans is both the most common fungal commensal microorganism in healthy individuals and the major fungal pathogen causing high mortality in at-risk populations, especially immunocompromised patients. In this review, we summarize the interplay between the host innate system and C. albicans, ranging from how the host recognizes, responds, and clears C. albicans infection to how C. albi...

ISG15 in Host Defense Against Candida albicans Infection in a Mouse Model of Fungal Keratitis

Purpose ISG15, a di-ubiquitin-like protein, is critical for controlling certain viral and bacterial infections. We sought to determine if ISG15 plays a role in corneal innate immunity against Candida albicans (C. albicans) using a C57BL/6 (B6) mouse model of human fungal keratitis. Methods Scarified corneas of adult B6 mice were pretreated with TLR5 ligand flagellin and then inoculated with C...

Role of interleukin-18 in host defense against disseminated Candida albicans infection.

In mice injected intravenously with Candida albicans, administration of anti-interleukin-18 (IL-18) antibodies increased the yeast load in the kidneys. There was no effect on the organ load with Candida when gamma interferon (IFN-gamma)-deficient mice were treated with anti-IL-18 antibodies, suggesting that the protective effect of IL-18 is mediated through endogenous IFN-gamma.
